When Jane, 84, first began physiotherapy with us in early February last year, she came with a concern that many can relate to: she’d noticed a decline in her strength and balance, and it was starting to affect her everyday life.
Leon, her TPC physiotherapist, took the time to really get to know Jane. Through gentle conversations and genuine curiosity, he learned more than just the physical challenges she was facing. Indeed, he uncovered what truly mattered to her.
“Jane is a very religious woman,” Leon said. “She often spoke about her faith, her friends at church, and how much being part of that community meant to her.”
Although Jane had still been attending church, her recent decline in strength and balance had made it increasingly risky. Through their conversations, it became clear the goal wasn’t just to keep her walking, it was to help her feel safe, steady, and confident doing what she loved most.
Leon: “So it was put to the task to build her confidence and physical ability so she could continue going to church without fear or hesitation.”
Together, they set a goal that was meaningful to Jane:
“To improve my walking so I can safely go to church.”
To get there, Leon focused on building Jane’s strength and balance, especially in her hips and legs.
Since church services often involve standing for long periods and frequently rising from a seated position, they practiced standing up and sitting down from low chairs, and worked on exercises that helped Jane stay steady on her feet.
Little by little, Jane’s confidence grew. And soon, she was back at church, walking in with a smile, ready to reconnect with her friends, her priests and her faith.
“She was so happy and grateful,” Leon said. “Achieving this goal gave her trust in herself again, and belief in what she was capable of.”
For Leon, who also shares Jane’s faith, it was a meaningful milestone: “It felt fantastic to help Jane not just move better, but get closer to what she loves most.”
With her goal achieved, Jane is now looking forward to the next one – walking to her friend Lina’s house. And with her strength, spirit, and Leon by her side, she’s well on her way.
“Jane’s really sweet and down to earth,” Leon added. “It’s been a joy helping her reach her goals.”
