Some goals aren’t about reaching a big-ticket destination, they’re about getting back to the small moments that bring us joy.
For TPC client Nancy, that moment was walking along Adelaide’s Urban Avenue once again.
Before fracturing her hip last year, Nancy loved getting out into her local neighbourhood. One of her favourite walks was along Urban Avenue, where the mature trees are home to an array of birdlife, including her beloved magpies, as well as colourful rosellas and many other native birds. As an animal lover, she also enjoyed seeing people out walking their dogs.
But following her hip fracture, that walk felt a long way out of reach.
Together with her physiotherapist, Jarrod, Nancy set an important goal:
“Be able to walk to the new houses built on Urban Avenue in a single 30-minute walk.”
Over the next six months, Jarrod and Nancy worked patiently towards that goal.
The journey began with rebuilding Nancy’s leg strength, reducing her pain and gradually restoring her confidence. Together they practised walking safely with a walker; they rebuilt her balance and confidence, and over time gradually increased the distance she could comfortably walk.
Shorter walks
Each milestone brought Nancy a little closer to Urban Avenue.
There were plenty of shorter walks along the way, but as Jarrod jokes, they were on “much more boring streets” with far fewer trees, birds and dogs to enjoy.
Then came the day Nancy achieved her goal.
As they made their way on foot down Urban Avenue, Nancy’s smile was impossible to miss. Spotting birds in the trees and waving to passing dogs reminded everyone why this goal had mattered so much to her.Â
Nancy’s achievement
Walking days quickly became Nancy’s favourite physiotherapy sessions.
For Jarrod, Nancy’s achievement was about far more than covering a distance.
“I’m extremely proud of Nancy’s dedication. Seeing the joy she gets from being outside, watching the birds and enjoying the neighbourhood is contagious. I always feel better after walking with her too,” Jarrod said.
At The Physio Co, we know that recovery isn’t just about building strength, it’s about helping people reconnect with the places, routines and simple moments that bring meaning to everyday life.
Congratulations, Nancy, on smashing another wonderful goal. We hope there are many more walks down Urban Avenue filled with birds, dogs and smiles.
