At 99 years old, TPC client Gwen had her sights set on something very special.
Her granddaughter was getting married, and Gwen had one important goal:
“I want to be able to make a toast at my granddaughter’s wedding.”
For Gwen, this wasn’t just about lifting a glass. It was about being part of a family milestone and celebrating the people she loves most.
“Gwen is incredibly close with her family and especially proud of her grandchildren,” says Harry, her TPC physiotherapist. “She talks about them often. Even though she uses a wheelchair these days, Gwen was determined that she would still celebrate the wedding in style.”
With her goal firmly fixed, Gwen and Harry got to work. Together, they focused on simple exercises to improve Gwen’s strength and flexibility, particularly through her left arm. One of Gwen’s favourite activities involved clasping her hands together and imagining she was doing a giant “Mexican wave”.
“She thought it was quite funny,” Harry says with a laugh.
Humour has always been a big part of their work together.
“There’s never a session with Gwen without a song, a poem or a story from her 99 years of life.”
The big day!
After months of practice, the big day finally arrived. Dressed in her gown and surrounded by family, Gwen proudly raised a glass of bubbles to honour her granddaughter.
“It was very special,” Gwen shared afterwards.
Although, true to form, she did mention that the wedding DJ had the music turned up far too loud for her liking!
For Harry, seeing Gwen achieve her goal was a memorable moment: “Seeing Gwen all dressed up and celebrating with her family made me feel elated and grateful to work with such amazing clients.”
And while the wedding toast has now been ticked off the list, Gwen is already working towards her next goal: improving her ability to reposition herself independently in her wheelchair. It’s another meaningful goal that will help Gwen maintain her independence and continue living life on her terms.
The message is clear: It’s never too late at any age to achieve something special!
