For Anne, 84, getting to art class each week is about much more than painting.
It’s something she loves doing, a chance to spend time doing something creative and meaningful. But there was one thing standing between Anne and her weekly class – a full flight of stairs.
So, together with her TPC physio, Tony, Anne set herself a goal:
“To be able to walk up the stairs to my art class every week.”
Anne loves painting animals and plants, and enjoys experimenting with different types of art. Being able to manage the stairs independently meant she could continue doing something that brings her joy, while also maintaining an important everyday skill.
Building strength, one step at a time
Tony began working with Anne twice a week, focusing not only on building the leg strength she needed to climb the stairs, but also her endurance so she could reach the top without feeling completely exhausted.
Rather than tackling the entire staircase straight away, they broke the goal down into smaller, achievable steps.
As Anne became stronger, they gradually increased the repetitions and began practising sections of the staircase.
Week by week, Anne kept at it.
Then, after around 12 weeks of persistent practice, those smaller steps added up to something pretty special – Anne was able to walk up and down the entire flight of stairs.
And what’s more, she could keep doing it.
Inspiring others along the way
Because Anne’s progress had happened gradually over a period of time, reaching her goal was almost a pleasant surprise.
But Anne and Tony weren’t the only ones who noticed.
Other residents attending the art class began seeing Anne walking up the stairs rather than using the chair lift. Her determination started encouraging some of them to give the stairs a go too.
For Tony, seeing Anne achieve her goal – and inspiring others in the process – made the moment even more special.
“I’m so happy that Anne is not only now strong enough to climb those stairs, but also has the belief and confidence to do it on a regular basis. Hearing that she is inspiring others along the way was a massive bonus,” he said.
So, what’s next for Anne?
Anne certainly isn’t stopping at the top of those stairs.
She and her husband, Brian, now have another exciting goal on the horizon – building Anne’s strength and confidence so they can go on a cruise to New Zealand with their family.
From getting back to art class to preparing for a family adventure, Anne’s story is a wonderful reminder that staying strong and mobile isn’t just about exercise.
It’s about being able to keep doing the things you love, and looking forward to what comes next.
Well done, Anne and Tony!
