When TPC client Jennifer, 83, set her goal – to be able to use her right arm to hold a shopping bag when doing the groceries – she knew it wouldn’t be easy.
Since having a stroke four years previous, Jennifer has been on a determined journey to regain strength and independence in the right side of her body. Importantly, every small milestone along that journey has paved the way to bigger wins!
TPC has had the privilege of working with Jennifer since late 2022, and throughout this time, she’s approached her rehab with fierce determination.
Early on, her goals were simple but powerful: reach a light switch, turn a door knob, shake someone’s hand. Each one was a meaningful step in reclaiming the use of her right arm, and now she can proudly tick off another: confidently carrying her grocery bag.
Markers of progress
Jennifer’s favourite stops – Bridge Point Aldi and IGA – are no longer just places to shop; they’ve become markers of progress. She doesn’t just walk through those aisles, she holds her shopping bag in her right hand with pride – proof of how far she’s come!
To get to this point, Jennifer’s physiotherapist, Antonio, focused on task-specific training. They started small, just holding a light bag with her right hand. Gradually, they introduced items, increasing the weight and building the challenge.
At the same time, Jennifer worked on isolated grip and arm strengthening, always aiming for that next level of independence.
Moving forward
For Jennifer, being able to hold that bag isn’t just about shopping, it’s a sign that things are progressing. Her right arm is stronger, more reliable, and that gives her confidence moving forward.
A well-earned milestone on a journey defined by persistence – well done, Jennifer!
