When TPC client Malcolm, 82, first set his goal of being able to lift the heavy pots on his balcony, it wasn’t just about strength, it was about passion.
One of Malcolm’s great joys is growing, shaping and maintaining bonsai trees. He not only tends to them at home but also shares them at shows and sells them to others who appreciate their beauty.
To do all of this, Malcolm needed to be able to safely move, lift, and re-pot his bonsai trees.
This goal was deeply important to him because without the ability to lift and handle the heavy pots, he couldn’t continue maintaining his bonsai trees, or showcasing them at events. That’s where the hard work began.
Balance and core strength
Together with his physiotherapist Katie, they focused on building his arm strength.
But they didn’t stop there. They also worked on squats so Malcolm could move with confidence when bending low, as well as balance and core strength to protect his back while lifting.
It took a couple of months of consistent effort, but Malcolm stayed committed, and we’re pleased to say his hard work paid off!
Recently, Malcolm proudly re-potted one of his bonsai trees and even took a couple along to a show. The smile on his face said it all. He was thrilled to be back doing what he loves most, and we were just as proud to see him achieve it.
New goal
Now, with bonsai pots no longer holding him back, Malcolm has his eyes set on a new goal: going for a walk along the beach with his daughter.
We’ve shifted our focus to building his walking fitness and preparing for the challenge of balancing on uneven sand.
Just like his bonsai trees, Malcolm is proof that with patience, care, and steady effort, great things can happen!
