Being able to walk confidently is often a big factor in an older person’s ability to do the things they love.
It is not just the physical loss of mobility that people experience as they age, but a loss of confidence in their mobility, too.
These things are often closely linked and can exacerbate each other: a loss of confidence can lead to a loss in mobility, and with a loss in mobility comes a further loss in confidence.

Case study: Getting Angela back to Greece!
TPC physio Katie had been working with a lovely lady named Angela.
Angela had a dream – to go back to Greece later in the year for a family wedding. Originating from Greece, Angela regularly made the trip back to visit her beloved relatives but since the Covid-19 pandemic – coupled with a loss of confidence – returning to her home country was becoming a far-fetched dream.
Here’s how Katie helped Angela back to Greece and some tips on how YOU or your loved one can improve confidence with walking:
1. Walk more!
If confidence is lost in walking ability, it’s not too late to build it back up.
Try starting with some very short walks in a safe spot. You could set up two chairs somewhere in the house or garden and start by walking between them – with a friend or helper close by if it feels safer.
Angela and Katie started off with a distance Angela could easily achieve. Once she felt comfortable and confident with that, they gradually increased the distance.
2. Set a goal
Having a goal helps to motivate you and focus on what CAN be done, rather than what can’t be done.
That way, when working towards a goal you’ll spend more time thinking about achieving it, rather than worrying about what you can’t do yet.
Angela’s goal meant everything to her – it gave her motivation and inspiration; even on the days she wasn’t feeling the best, her goal would get her out of the house and pounding the pavement!
3. Get family and friends involved
Tell your family and friends about your goals to improve your confidence and mobility.
Angela’s daughters would regularly join in the fun, going for multiple long walks a week with Angela where they would visualise the beautiful streets of Greece together!
In just six months, Angela didn’t need to visualise any more, because she truly was walking the streets of Greece with her family and attending the wedding!
Now back home in Australia, Angela is already talking about her next trip to Greece! How good is that?
