When our client Elizabeth (aka Betty), 87, told her physiotherapist, Brooke, she wanted to concentrate on her walking, Brooke knew this goal would be about more than just distance.
Living on her own, Betty values being able to get out and about in her community, walking safely and confidently while using her frame.
Walking provides Betty with a sense of independence and means she can stop for a chat with her neighbours, a small but very important part of staying socially connected.
Together, Brooke and Betty set a new goal: to extend Betty’s walks beyond her usual block and build up to a longer route.
After a few months working towards this goal, Betty steadily increased her walking distance. Along the way, she worked on her strength and balance, stretching, and managing the occasional aches and pains, all the while taking shorter walks that gradually built her endurance.
We’re pleased to say all of Betty’s hard work paid off when she managed to walk an incredible 950 metres in one go! 🥳
Betty described the moment perfectly:
“It makes me realise what I can achieve.”
She feels proud and accomplished, and so do we! It’s inspiring to watch our clients, such as Betty, push themselves a little further each time, rather than settling for what felt more comfortable.
What’s next? Betty is aiming to keep building consistency by completing this walk more often, while also working on navigating her new platform steps at home with her frame.
Each step forward means more confidence, more independence, and more opportunities for Betty to keep living safely in her own home.
Congratulations, Betty – you’ve shown just how far determination and persistence can take you!
