The Physio Co has published its first book. Called Moving is Living: Simple steps to stay active, confident and full of life in your 70s, 80s and beyond, the book is a culmination of 20+ years working with Aussie seniors to help keep them moving so they can remain living independently at home.
The book’s author and founder of The Physio Co, Tristan White, describes Moving Is Living as a short, encouraging and inspiring book for people in their 70s, 80s and beyond who want to keep moving, stay living at home and continue doing more of the things they love.
He says it brings together lots of the things we’ve learned over the 20-plus years of TPC helping people stay mobile, safe and happy.
“My name’s on the cover as author, but the book is the work of our whole team, past and present. Thousands of visits. Thousands of conversations. Plenty of setbacks, small wins and determined people who kept going when moving became harder,” Tristan says.
Below is an excerpt from the book.
Moving is Living: An introduction
Ros is watering her tomatoes when her neighbour Jan calls over the fence: “Walking group on Wednesday?”
“Wouldn’t miss it,” Ros calls back.
Ros is 82, lives in a Melbourne retirement village, and she’s got absolutely no plans to slow down. She gardens, travels when the budget allows, and walks with Jan and the group most weeks – the kind of regular routine that keeps her body moving and her social calendar full.
Over a cuppa, she’ll happily chat about anything interesting: new ideas, places worth visiting, things worth trying. She’s also known for having strong opinions about people who tell her to “take it easy.” (Jan knows not to go there!)
Here’s the thing about Ros, though: last winter something changed.
She slipped on wet tiles as she was getting out of the shower. Nothing broken, thank god, but for three days afterwards, she second-guessed every step, wondering if her legs would hold or if the ground was as steady as it used to be. That wobble, in her legs and in her head, is what she’s determined never to let take over.
Ros doesn’t mind getting older. What she does mind is anyone assuming she’s slowing down, and she especially minds the idea of someone else making decisions about her life.
Her daily mission is simple: stay active, stay strong, stay confident, and keep living in her village, doing her usual things, for as long as possible.
Sound familiar?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a bit like Ros. Maybe a lot like her. You’re not ready to sit still, you’ve got plans, and you want to stay in your own place, do your own thing, and keep showing up for the people and activities you love.
This book is for you. Pull up a chair…
I’ve worked with people exactly like Ros — and if there’s one thing I know, it’s that the wobble doesn’t have to win.
G’day! My name’s Tristan White, and I’m a physiotherapist who has spent more than 20 years helping people in their 70s, 80s, and beyond.
In my experience, staying active, confident and connected is rarely about big efforts or complicated programs, though I won’t pretend that there’s no effort at all, because you’d see straight through that. It’s about small, consistent movement connected to the things you actually care about: a walk with a friend, time in the garden, or getting to Sunday lunch with family.
Ros, and the thousands of real people she represents, would know this. It’s why she tends her tomatoes, walks with Jan, and keeps saying yes to life.
And it’s almost certainly why you picked up this book.
My hope is that these pages remind you that moving is living, and that even small, everyday movement can help you keep doing what matters most to you.
So, let’s get into it. Whatever’s on your to-do list today can wait!
