At 98 years old, Georgina is proof that determination and perseverance have no age limit.
When TPC physiotherapist Brooke first met Georgina in January, 2025, she was wheelchair-bound after a fall back in June, 2024.
But despite her condition, Georgina (pictured below) wanted to regain her independence by walking (with her walking frame) from her room in an aged care facility, all the way down the hall to the dining room, a distance of about 75 metres.
That’s her big goal, but first Georgina has had to build up by achieving smaller, more manageable goals, and we’re pleased to say that through dedication, patience, and consistent physiotherapy, she has made remarkable strides, both literally and figuratively.
Short-term goal
Like all great achievements, Brooke and Georgina started with a smaller, short-term goal: walking approximately five metres from her bed to the bathroom using her frame.
Over the past few months, Georgina worked hard on her sit-to-stand movements, gradually improving her strength and mobility. Each session brought small but meaningful progress, reinforcing her confidence and ability.
With steady support and encouragement from Brooke, Georgina eventually took her first steps with her walker, a milestone that filled her with pride.
But last week – some nine months after her fall – Georgina improved greatly on her initial short-term goal goal. Not only did she walk to the bathroom, but she also walked out of her room and back (20m) – an achievement that took her by surprise.
Pushing limits
Her daughter Gail, who was present during the session, watched in awe as Georgina pushed past her limits, demonstrating just how much she had gained through her persistence.
This special moment was celebrated by Brooke, who has been working closely with Georgina on her mobility. The joy on Georgina’s face was a testament to the power of setting goals and staying committed to them.
Stories like Georgina’s remind us that it’s never too late to achieve something new. Whether it’s taking those first few steps, regaining independence, or simply proving to yourself that you can do it – every victory counts, no matter how small!
Congratulations, Georgina, on this inspiring milestone!
