For TPC client Carol, 81, staying active isn’t just about exercise, it’s about continuing to do the things she loves. One of those things is attending her weekly line dancing class with friends at her village.
Dancing has always been an important part of Carol’s routine, helping her stay active, connected and enjoying life. However, she had started to notice her balance wasn’t quite what it used to be.
Rather than letting that stop her, Carol set a goal with her physiotherapist, Katie:
“To improve my balance so it makes my dancing class easier.”
Carol knew that staying active was key to maintaining her health and independence, and she wanted to feel confident and safe while continuing to enjoy her weekly dancing classes and regular walks.
To help her achieve this goal, Carol and Katie worked on a range of balance-focused activities, including standing on one leg, walking sideways and backwards, and even practising the ‘grapevine’, a movement commonly used in dancing.
Over time, Carol’s hard work paid off.
When she reached her goal, Carol was delighted to find that her dance classes felt easier and that her coordination had improved.
For Katie, seeing Carol achieve her goal was a proud moment.
“Carol worked consistently towards her goal, and it was wonderful to see her confidence grow as her balance improved. Knowing she can continue enjoying something she loves makes it all worthwhile.”
Carol is already looking ahead to her next challenge. Together, she and Katie are now working towards her new goal:
“To walk down to Flying Fox Park and complete the loop three times per week.”
Congratulations, Carol. We can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
