When Katherine, 84, first met TPC physiotherapist Shilpa, one thing was clear – she was ready to get moving again.
After feeling like she’d lost her fitness during COVID, Katherine knew it was time to rebuild her confidence and independence.
Together, Katherine and Shilpa landed on a meaningful goal: To confidently take out the bins and check the mailbox.
To Katherine, these everyday tasks symbolised independence.
“Everyone on the street does it, and I want to keep doing it too,” she told Shilpa.
Shilpa worked closely with Katherine to help her make that goal a reality.
Over three months, they focused on hands-on treatment to manage pain, a tailored home exercise program, mobility training, and practice walks to the mailbox and bins. Shilpa also helped review her footwear and prescribed orthotics to support her balance and comfort.
Thanks to their teamwork, Katherine soon achieved her goal, and more!
Not only does she now check her mailbox and take out her bins with confidence, she also brings in her neighbour’s bins too!
“I prefer two at once,” she laughs. “It helps me feel balanced.”
For Katherine, this milestone has been life-changing. It’s brought back her independence, her confidence, and her sense of purpose.
And for Shilpa? “I felt incredibly happy and proud,” she said. “It’s such a privilege to support someone like Katherine and see her shine.”
What’s next for Katherine?
Shilpa and Katherine are now working on helping to reduce Kath’s neck pain so she can comfortably turn her head while driving.
Katherine’s story is a beautiful reminder that small goals can lead to big wins, and with the right support, anything is possible.
With Shilpa’s guidance and encouragement, Katherine has regained her confidence and independence, one step at a time. We can’t wait to see what she achieves next.
