Is your elderly Mum or Dad one fall away from a nursing home?
One in three Australian seniors will suffer at least one fall per year.
As our Mums and Dads age, one important thing we can do is help them reduce the chances of a bad fall. The statistics tell the story, with about 30 per cent of adults over the age of 65 having at least one fall per year, that’s one in three older adults.
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related admission to hospital for seniors.
The Physio Co (TPC) is a seniors-only physiotherapy company that has been operating continuously in Australia for 20 years.
We have delivered over two million individual consultations to elderly Australians in aged care facilities. From this extensive experience, we've seen that one of the most common reasons people move into residential aged care is from having a bad fall at home. We want to help you to prevent that for your Mum or Dad.
Over the past five years TPC has started to work exclusively with older people in their own homes, helping them live independently for longer. One of the important things we do with with our clients is to build strength and confidence in moving about, which reduces the chances of falling over.
We also have programs to help older people recover, regain their confidence and bounce back to a full, active life after a fall has slowed them down. If your Mum or Dad has already had a fall, please take action to help them stay active as soon as you can.
Why falls lead to a nursing home
There are lots of things that change in ageing bodies, including weaker muscles, poorer vision and fainter hearing. While these changes can be inevitable, fall prevention is possible and so is avoiding the injuries, the possible move to aged care and the loss of quality of life that usually happens next.
Five key risk factors that can cause your elderly Mum or Dad to fall:
- Muscle weakness – As we get older, we lose muscle mass and strength, particularly in the lower legs.
- Loss of balance – With the loss of muscle strength, balance and coordination may be impaired.
- Not moving enough – While it may be tempting to relax in your retirement, not being active can lead to muscle weakness and falls.
- History of falls – This is the greatest indicator for future falls and needs to be assessed by a professional.
- Fear of falling – Falls can be frightening. The fear of falling can reduce the confidence that your Mum or Dad have in staying active at home and out and about.

When we get a referral, we reply within 2 hours to schedule a call with our new senior client and/or their HCP Manager.
Within 24 hours of a new client booking, we will call our new client and/or their HCP Manager to set up the first consultation.
A physiotherapist will visit our new client wherever they call home for the first consultation and listen closely to what pain and/or health problems are causing trouble.
At the first consultation, our physio will complete an assessment of your health, fitness and / or injury.Â
We will then create a one-page plan of the health goals we agree are most important to work on together.
We share the agreed goal plan with our client, and, you – the HCP manager.
Sharing our goal plan creates a small team that is set up for success with all the information about what we are working on, for how long, and the costs involved.
Once we have agreed on the plan and funding has been approved, our physio will visit the client and guide them through the series of agreed appointments and recommendations to get the best outcome possible.
Waitlists, invoicing and more - lots of answers for you here
We are responsive and proactive: We respond within 2 hours, and book appointments within 24 hours. We always remain in contact regarding a client’s condition, and if appointments have been cancelled or need rescheduling.
Â
We communicate in clear, concise and honest ways: Creating and sending our physio’s recommendations and client Goal Plan to you – the HCP manager – for approval helps manage budget and expectations. No appointments go ahead without funding approval.
Â
We show we care, and, we get results: Our physios build meaningful connections with our clients and HCP managers. We create unique, person-centred goal plans that help our seniors clients smash their health goals!
When a HCP manager emails a client referral to TPC, we will reply within the first 2 business hours to acknowledge the referral and say thanks!
We will then contact the client to book in the initial appointment and welcome them to The Physio Co. (We aim to have this first appointment booked and welcome call complete within 24 hours of receiving the referral).
Our physio will then attend the initial appointment and listen closely to what pain/ health problems the client has along with conducting a physio assessment.Â
After the initial assessment, the physio will create a detailed goal plan that includes:
- A specific meaningful goal the client is wanting to achieve; and
- What the physio and the client will be working on together to reach this goal; and
- How many sessions the physio recommends along with a review date and cost.
We then send this goal plan to you – the HCP manager – for funding approval.
Once funding and plan of care has been agreed, our caring physio gets to work helping the client achieve their goal.
When the agreed number of services have been delivered and/or the agreed review date arrives, our physio will review the client’s progress and email the HCP manager with an update – including any further recommendations. (We typically celebrate with the client and HCP Manager at this point too because that initial goal has nearly always been smashed!!)
Across most of metro Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, we have physios available to see new clients within a few days.
That is, for most clients, there are no waiting lists.
The Physio Co will invoice the HCP directly for services delivered. Our preferred terms of payment is 14 days from service delivery.
