For TPC client Anneke, 83, walking isn’t just exercise, it represents freedom.
Anneke (pictured) loves walking and believes it’s important in order to maintain her independence.
One of the things she enjoys most is being able to walk to the Cremorne shops, whether it’s to pick up a few groceries, catch up with friends, or simply to get out and about and get some fresh air.Â
So, when Anneke and her physiotherapist Tony set a goal together, it wasn’t just to improve her walking. It was:
“To be able to walk to Cremorne shops to have a nice glass of wine as a reward.”
Now that’s a goal we can all get behind!
Over the next 12 weeks, Anneke and Tony worked together every fortnight, focusing on building the strength and stamina she needed to keep walking confidently. While they met regularly, much of Anneke’s success came from the work she put in between appointments, consistently completing her exercises and staying committed to her goal.
When it came time to review her progress, Anneke had achieved what she’d set out to do. True to her calm and practical nature, there were no big celebrations, just the quiet satisfaction of knowing she could once again make the walk to the shops without any help.
Fiercely independent
Tony couldn’t be prouder. He said: “Anneke worked incredibly hard and stayed consistent throughout the whole journey. She’s fiercely independent, and it was wonderful to see her achieve something that means so much to her,” he said.
Of course, reaching one goal simply makes room for the next one.
Later this year, Anneke is travelling to her home country, the Netherlands, to spend time with her family. She’s now working with Tony to build the strength and confidence she’ll need for the long journey, so she can make the most of every moment overseas.
At The Physio Co, we believe the best physiotherapy goals aren’t about perfect balance scores or stronger muscles. They’re about helping people continue doing the things they love.
Sometimes that’s dancing at a grandchild’s wedding.
Sometimes it’s getting back to lawn bowls.
And sometimes, it’s simply walking to your local shops, knowing you’ve earned that well-deserved glass of wine.
Congratulations, Anneke!
