Family means everything for our client, Poppy, 78.
She loves nothing more than babysitting her granddaughter, Mia, and helping out wherever she can. But as Mia grew, Poppy noticed that lifting her into the pram was becoming more difficult, and sometimes her back would ache after a busy day of playing and cooking.
That’s when Poppy and our physio Eliza set a meaningful goal:
“To feel strong lifting my granddaughter Mia into her pram, so we can go on walks when I look after her!”
Being able to lift Mia with confidence meant Poppy could keep doing what she loves most – helping her daughter, and staying actively involved in her family’s daily life. For Poppy, it wasn’t just about physical strength, but about staying useful, connected, and proud of her role as a grandmother.
The path to strength
Poppy’s sessions with Eliza focused on safe, strong bend-and-lift movements, making sure she could handle everything from babysitting to cooking without worrying about injury.
Importantly, between her fortnightly sessions, Poppy committed to a daily stretching routine to manage back stiffness, along with resistance and bodyweight exercises to build strength. This extra work made all the difference!
By the time Poppy achieved her goal, she wasn’t just lifting Mia with ease, she was also welcoming a brand new granddaughter, Amelia, into the family!
The good news is that since Amelia’s arrival, Poppy felt strong enough to welcome her family to live with her, sharing how energetic and mobile she felt, and how wonderful it was to be able to cook, clean, and care for both girls.
“I feel young again,” Poppy told us with a smile, though she admitted she’s still hoping for a bit more sleep once baby Amelia settles into a routine!
“I’m so happy to see Poppy feeling strong and capable again,” Eliza says. “I know how important it is for her to be able to help her daughter, and be actively involved with her granddaughters. She’s so proud of that role – and rightly so.”
Poppy’s journey doesn’t stop here. She’s now focused on building even more strength and mobility, so she can keep playing with Mia on the floor and caring for baby Amelia, all while keeping her back pain in check.
