When Janice, 85, first began physiotherapy in March, her main concern was neck pain. She had limited movement and wasn’t all that active, mainly just walking to and from lunch and dinner.
But a lot can change in just a few months with the right support, a clear goal, and a little bit of determination!
After working with TPC physiotherapist, Katie, to ease her neck pain and restore her movement, it was time to set a new challenge. That’s when Janice and Katie set their sights on something that felt a little out of reach at the time:
To be able to go up and down six steps easily at her apartment complex.
For many of us, a few steps might not seem like a big deal. But for Janice, who also experiences knee pain, it represented independence, confidence, and peace of mind, especially for the times when the apartment lift is out of order.
Over six weeks, the two worked side by side, gradually building Janice’s strength and endurance. They started small, just one step at a time, and slowly built up to all six steps. They also mixed in leg strengthening exercises and walking to keep the momentum going.
And then, she did it!
Six steps.
No fear.
No hesitation.
Just strength, skill, and confidence.
Reaching the goal has opened new doors for Janice – literally. She now feels confident tackling steps when she’s out with family, and she no longer worries about what she’ll do if the lift isn’t working.
“I was so proud when Jan achieved this,” Katie says. “It wasn’t easy for her with her knee pain, but she stuck with it and got there.”
So what’s next for Janice?
She’s not slowing down. Now, she’s working on her walking endurance so she can stroll down to the village centre and join in the activities there.
One goal down, another one on the horizon.
We can’t wait to see what Janice conquers next!
