At The Physio Co we strive to wow people whenever possible, because great care isn’t just about treatment, it’s about transformation.
Recently, while TPC physio Jarrod (pictured above) was away on annual leave, Karleen – one of our senior physios in Adelaide – took over his rounds and met one of his long-standing clients, Antonia (Toni), and her daughter, Helen.
As the three of them spoke, Karleen quickly became aware just how much of a lasting impact Jarrod had made on the lives of Toni and Helen.
“I would not be walking today if it was not for Jarrod,” Toni told Karleen. “He is the physio who helped me get to where I am today and back home so I can take care of my daughter.”
Toni’s gratitude comes from a deep and personal journey. After undergoing complicated hip and leg surgery – complete with plates and nails, and battling a severe abdominal hernia that restricted her movement – Toni’s mobility was significantly limited.
With her prospects dim and facing rejection from inpatient rehabilitation due to bureaucratic hurdles, she found herself stuck in a respite facility with no clear path back home. Her confidence was shattered, and nursing home placement seemed inevitable, something she desperately wanted to avoid.
Enter Jarrod.
Rather than simply giving instructions, Jarrod worked closely with Toni, believing in her potential when few others did.
Through careful assessment, he showed Toni she was more capable than she thought. Together, they developed a rehabilitation plan aimed first at getting her accepted into a rehab program, and then ultimately getting her back home again.
As Jarrod got to know Helen, it became clear she too needed support. Living together for many years, Helen had taken on a caregiver role that had become physically and emotionally draining.
Jarrod extended his care to help Helen build her own confidence in movement and daily activities, encouraging her to become more active, from sleeping in her bed again, to cooking and participating more fully in everyday life.
Their goals were simple, but deeply meaningful:
- Toni wanted to get back into her garden, tending to her beloved roses. With targeted exercises to strengthen her mobility, she has achieved just that. Toni now confidently walks down the ramp to care for her plants.
- Helen’s aim was to reclaim her independence by sleeping in her own bed, not a recliner. Through perseverance and tailored exercises, she is steadily reclaiming her space and strength.
One breakthrough moment for Toni came recently during a car transfer assessment. She was certain she would struggle, but to her surprise, she nailed it on the first try!
For someone who had been completely reliant on access cabs, this moment represented newfound freedom and hope.
For Jarrod, working with Toni and Helen has been inspiring.
“It’s great to work with them both as I love seeing their tenacity in the face of so many setbacks and health complications,” he says.
“Toni is one of the most resilient people I’ve ever met, and is utterly dedicated to whatever it takes to remain independent for as long as possible. Hearing her words of praise is truly humbling, and I am proud to help guide her to give her the absolute best chance.”
Jarrod’s dedication, belief, and personalized care embody exactly what it means to be memorable (which is one of the core values we live by here at TPC) – not only has he delivered outstanding physiotherapy, but also created a life-changing impact for two people that will not be forgotten.
