When we first met Mark, 81, he was going through a particularly tough time. A serious calf strain had landed him in hospital with severe swelling and pain; from there, he spent some time in respite before returning home.
The once-active Mark, who loved swimming and walking, was now deconditioned and struggling with mobility, pain, and swelling in his right leg and ankle.
From the very first session with his TPC physiotherapist Mia, one thing was clear: Mark missed his dog, Buffy. A lot.
Perfect goal
Due to safety concerns, Buffy wasn’t living at home with Mark during his recovery, and it was obvious how deeply he felt her absence. That’s when the perfect goal became clear to Mia: to get Mark strong and confident enough to walk Buffy around the park again.
They started slowly, building strength in his legs, improving his balance, and gradually increasing his walking stamina.
With Buffy’s off-lead walking style, they had a head start, but the real turning point came when Mark began using his gait aids – his walking stick and walker – consistently and confidently.
Not long after, Mark achieved what he’d set out to do: he and Buffy were back to their cherished morning park walks.
The impact was huge! Buffy is now back living at home with Mark, and those morning walks have become a joyful daily ritual again. Mark is visibly happier, more independent, and proud of what he’s accomplished.
Mia reflected on Mark and his wonderful achievement. She said:Â
“I feel incredibly proud of how far he’s come in such a short time. Seeing Buffy curled up next to him during our visits is a pretty special sight—and a great reminder of why these goals matter so much.”
What’s next for Mark?Â
Now that he is more confident in using his walker, he and Mia are tackling some harder walks. Mark loves going to Kooyong tennis club, but is not confident with using his walker to walk there. There is a busy intersection and a train line to cross which can be tricky to navigate with a walker.Â
A new goal has been set to build Mark’s confidence to walk to Kooyong Tennis club safely.Â
It’s a bit more complex, involving busy roads and train crossings, but we know they are both up for the challenge. With a bit more time and practice, we’re confident Mark will be making that walk too.
Well done, Mark – and welcome home, Buffy!
