Physio Exercise Helps Seniors Smash Goals
Not everyone loves exercise; in fact, for many of us it can seem a real chore, particularly as we get older. But if you have a clear goal in mind, the end result will always make the effort worthwhile.
Enid Walkington makes no secret of the fact that she finds her exercise program hard work – but with the encouragement of her physiotherapist, her commitment to staying active is paying off.
She says: “I put up with doing the exercises with (physiotherapist) Karleen because I know it allows me to attend church, go to craft and join the family at the family shack during the holidays.
“As much as I hate exercising, I really look forward to seeing Karleen once a week and for the company and her positive attitude to keep me moving.”
For her part, The Physio Co’s Karleen Scott loves working with Enid and says they enjoy a good laugh between exercises.
Enid’s main motivation was to be mobile enough to still attend church, which is a real social hub for her. “I want to keep active and remain independent so that I can be driven to church every Sunday where I get to catch up with old friends after the service,” she says.
Get in and out of a car
She has been attending the same church for 95 years; it’s where she was baptised as a child, where she went with her parents, where she was married and where her children were all baptised.
However, arthritic knees make it increasingly difficult for Enid to walk and get in and out of a car.
Enid and her friend Ruth, who also lives in the village, often get a lift with another churchgoer. They have been friends “forever”, and as several of her friends have passed away, she cherishes this connection with Ruth and other church members.
The Physio Co helped Enid focus on the need to keep moving and stay strong enough to live independently and do the things she really enjoys.
Her painful knees made getting in and out of a car an issue, so “sit to stand” was one of the exercises Enid did with her physio. She finds the exercise hard to do, but it helps her continue to get in and out of a car without assistance.
Karleen is impressed by Enid’s determination, adding: “Enid has true determination to remain independently living for as long as she can.”
Well done Enid – another inspiring case of a Physio Co client who has smashed their exercise goal.
